Puget Sound is home to some truly fascinating water-dwellers, and they’re not as hard to see as you might think. If you don’t mind getting your feet wet in some truly cold water, that is.
There are several locations that are great for low tide walks, including Discovery Park, Carkeek Park, and Me-Kwa-Mooks Park. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can find a guided tour put on by the parks department. For example, on Sunday, August 8 from 8:30-10:30, you can join a free tour group at Discovery Park. Download the Seattle Park’s Summer 2010 Guide for more information.
Of course, you can venture out on your own if you wish. Simply look up the low tide schedule at head out to your favorite beach!
You can expect to see starfish, sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and much more! Just remember to bring your sensible, waterproof shoes and leave your squeamish side at home! And whatever you do, don’t feed the animals.
