If art is your thing, stop when you see a gigantic “hammering man” sculpture in downtown Seattle. This is the home of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), housing a world-class collection of art. The museum went through a huge expansion in 2006-2007 into the new building which housed the now defunct Washington Mutual. The expansion gave SAM a huge increase in gallery space, with many brand-new unique galleries and exhibition spaces. The museum is known for its collection of modern & contemporary art, along with one of the nations’ premier collections of Northwest Coast Native American art and artifacts. SAM also houses a large collection of outdoor sculptures nearby at the Olympic Sculpture Park and a collection of Asian art at the Seattle Asian Art Museum on Capitol Hill.
If you are on a budget, admission to the Seattle Art Museum is free to SAM members and free to the general public on the first Thursday of each month. They also offer tours of their collections, which are highly recommended.
