Rat City Rollergirls: Seattle Things to Do #147

Although Rat City is technically a nickname for White Center, we wouldn’t be doing our city justice without mentioning some of the fine attractions of our neighbors to the south. Enter the Rat City Rollergirls.

It might not be a well-known sport, but the roller derby has all of the elements that draw big crowds: non-stop action, rowdy fans, skilled athletes in tight uniforms, and just a hint of aggression. The Rat City Rollergirls are the city’s resident club, with 80 skaters divided into four teams. And while the rules are hard to explain, you only have to watch one two-minute “jam” before you catch on to the ways of the track.

Intrigued? You’re in luck: their season opener is on January 15th at Key Arena, and the winning team gets to donate a big check to the charity of their choice. Beware, because after watching a whole night of the roller derby, you’re going to want to get yourself a pair of striped socks, think up a silly name, and join the team yourself!
