The Hwy 99 tunnel project is about to begin boring the new tunnel under Downtown Seattle to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct. All of this digging is going to be done by Bertha, the 5-story/7,000 ton boring machine that is just about ready to get started. Before Bertha gets going, the public is invited to get an up-close look at the behemoth this weekend at the dedication ceremony.
If you visit, you’ll get a chance to wander over the 80-ft deep launch pit and see Seattle’s newest underground creature before it disappears into the new tunnel. You’ll also have a chance to sign your name on the tunnel liner walls before they are installed. Dress for a construction site if you go.
