Looking for a new holiday tradition? Join thousands of people across the country in The Audubon Society’s 111th Annual Christmas Bird Count. Although usually on the last Saturday in December, this year the Seattle area Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be held on January 1, 2011. Audubon bird experts will lead teams of volunteers as they track over 120 species of birds in 15-regions throughout the Seattle-area. Both newcomers and experienced bird-watchers are welcome. The event takes place regardless of the weather, so dress warm, pack a lunch, and grab your binoculars for a day of wing watching. More details on the Seattle event – including how to register – can be found here.
2009 results are listed on their website. Last year, a significant recovery in Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons was noted, and “American Crows continue to expand their hold on the urban environment.” Now that is no suprise!
