There are at least 1000 brave (or foolish) souls in Seattle who will ring in the New Year by jumping into Lake Washington at the 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Matthews Beach.
Having come from the Midwest, Seattle’s version isn’t quite as adventurous as diving into a lake that has ice on it, but it is pretty darn close, as the water temp is in the low 40’s.
Costumes are encouraged, and you will receive the official badge of courage for your exploits. The safety tips recommend not drinking alcohol because it accelerates hypothermia. I’m guessing that suggestion isn’t regularly followed.
The plunge begins at noon on January 1, 2012 at Matthews Beach Park.
